Principality

A principality is (or was) a land ruled by a prince. It is distinguished from a kingdom, either by being of modest size, or by lacking full sovereignty.

The German term is Fürstentum, which usually in English is rendered as principality.

Liechtenstein, Andorra, and Monaco are European principalities and present-day States.

By contrast, Wales, which has a titular prince and is often referred to as a principality, is not a state.
